Modeling terms, explained: TFP, comp card, day rate and more

A quick, honest glossary of the terms you will meet when you start.

Comp card

A one-page professional summary: a main portrait, a few varied shots and your measurements.

TFP (time for print)

A shoot where no one is paid in money. The model and the team exchange time for images they can each use. Useful to build a portfolio, but always check the usage terms.

Day rate

The fee for a full day of work, agreed before the shoot.

Usage rights

Where, how and for how long the images can be used: organic social, paid ads, print, e-commerce. Broader usage should mean higher pay.

Buyout

A one-time fee to use the images widely instead of paying per usage over time.

Exclusivity

An agreement not to work with competing brands for a set period. It has a cost and should be paid for.

Open call

A public casting call anyone eligible can apply to.

Beginner-friendly

A casting that accepts models with no prior experience.
